What we aim for, we tend to miss
Striving for happiness doesn’t get us there.
In trying to gain control, we tend to lose it.
Attempting to influence someone without also opening yourself up to it doesn’t work.
Aiming directly at something makes it likely we’ll miss. We don’t account for forces that slow us down, dampen our efforts, totally derail us.
This is why CEOs set one revenue target with their board, and a much higher one internally. It’s why pilots often “crab” planes upon landing: by aiming slightly to the left or right of the runway, crosswinds will end up pushing you straight ahead.
Open up the aperture of your target, and the rest will take care of itself.
